Weaning Tips for Mothers

For most new mothers, decisions on important events of their babies’ life come with a certain pressure since they want to make the right decisions for the well being of their children. Weaning a child is not a one-day thing but a gradual process of introducing your child to foods other than the mother’s milk. One of the greatest concerns mothers have is about the appropriate time to start winning their child as they want to avoid any complications that could occur as result of maybe wrong weaning time. Recommendations says you should breastfeed your child for the first 6months without anything else and then the process of weaning can start from there. One of the reasons given for this recommendation is that breastfeeding for 6months assists in protecting your baby against chronic diseases since it contains the ideal carbohydrates, proteins and even fats for the well being of the baby. For the mother it is said that breastfeeding will help in losing the pregnancy weight which most mothers want to get rid of. Observing your child is crucial since some children will give you the lead of when to start weaning them and therefore despite recommendations the choice of when to start the process is still the mothers child. There comes a time when your baby starts rejecting breast-milk and desire other foods which is normal and is referred to as natural weaning.

If your child is unwell for various reasons, it would be important to postpone weaning process until the baby is well again. Patterns for babies are very different even if they are of the same mother hence you must be ready to observe and know your baby to avoid using patterns that don’t work with your baby. Weaning is a gradual process hence could take weeks or even months and therefore mothers don’t stop breastfeeding immediately they introduce the baby to other foods. Immediate stop of breastfeeding could have serious effects on both the mother and the child and that’s why it’s recommended for the weaning to be a gradual process. Your breasts can become engorged or even be at a risk of getting breast infections or depression due sudden hormone drop. When you start weaning your child more concerns arise as to what foods are appropriate for your baby. Preparing your baby’s food at home is the most recommended way of weaning your baby since you are aware of what you are cooking unlike bought foods which may not even reveal all ingredients used. Processed foods could have high level of sugars and may not even comprise of the ideal nutrients for the baby.
